I used to ride my bike to work in London. When I moved to NY, I did the same. It was very different then. Hardly any bike infrastructure. People thought I was nuts. I lived on the West Side by the Hudson River and I could ride all the way down the Hudson River Greenway to Goldman at One New York Plaza near Wall Street without coming into contact with any cars / traffic. That’s what I call joyful riding. Where you don’t have to worry about cars and traffic.
My advocacy is based on the idea that everyone should be able to get around this city safely:
Pedestrians,
People on bikes,
People using public transit,
People with mobility issues, and
People using a whole host of micro-mobility devices
And we should be able to do all that in a city that is quieter, less polluted, more pleasant and welcoming. This requires a better allocation of street space. Did you know that 80% of people in Manhattan do not own or have access to a car?
THE NEW THIRD AVENUE BOULEVARD
I started getting involved with Transportation Alternatives a few years back and co-launched my first campaign to remake Third Avenue in 2021.
The New Third Avenue Boulevard
I am thrilled to say that the DOT came back with its first ever proposal to remake Third Avenue in October 2022 and plans to start work in 2023. This will take a 5 lane highway through the middle of Manhattan and calm it dramatically with a protected bike lane, a bus lane and leave 3 lanes for vehicle traffic.
